The History of French Toast
Despite its name, French toast actually dates back much further than France. The concept of soaking stale bread in a mixture of eggs and milk before frying it can be traced back to ancient Roman times, where it was used as a clever way to revive bread that had gone stale.
The dish became popular in 17th-century England, and over time variations spread across Europe and America. The term “French toast” is believed to have first appeared in the United States in 1724.
Today, there are countless ways to prepare French toast—from sweet and cinnamon-spiced to savory variations—but the heart of the dish remains the same: turning simple ingredients into a warm, comforting meal.
My French Toast Story
Most families have their own favorite French toast recipe, and in my home it was always a breakfast that brought everyone together. With my growing boys, it quickly became a household favorite whenever I made it.
Each person had their own way they liked to enjoy it—some loved extra syrup, others preferred fresh berries on top. What I’ve always loved most about French toast is how versatile it is. It can be made for a cozy weekend breakfast or prepared ahead of time and reheated later.
French toast also stores very well in the refrigerator or freezer and reheats beautifully in the oven, bringing back that same comforting Sunday brunch feeling every time.
